Resurfacing | What You Need to Know

Like all reputable resurfacing specialists, we recognise that different surfaces face their own unique demands. Many factors influence how a surface deteriorates. These include its location, purpose, material and the quality of the foundations. For example, a quiet rural road suffers wear and tear in a different way to a busy urban highway that bears consistently heavy loads.

In order to deliver an effective solution with optimal longevity, we provide bespoke resurfacing solutions tailored to specific needs.

Whether you’re in Accrington, Blackburn, Darwen or any of the surrounding areas, your resurfacing service will likely fall under one of the following:

Inlay

A & T Resurfacing excels in asphalt and tarmacing services, so we are adept at inlay work. Your road consists of multiple layers, the uppermost of which is the ‘wearing course’. Below that is the ‘base’ layer. The foundation, which is typically a sub-base of crushed hardcore, sits beneath this.

Inlay work involves repairing road surfaces that have deteriorated beyond repair. In most cases, this focuses on the surface layer, or wearing course. Our resurfacing specialists mechanically remove this to an approximate depth of 45mm before laying a tack coat and a new surface.

However, inlay services can also include removal and replacement of lower layers too. Regardless, the foundations remain intact and strong enough to support the road for many years to come.

Overlay

If your road hasn’t deteriorated to the point where it needs an inlay, but signs of wear and tear are showing, our tarmacing team usually performs an overlay. This process involves adding material to the existing wearing course, improving its profile and strength.

We can only undertake such work where existing roads in Accrington, Blackburn, Darwen or the neighbouring areas have the qualities for laying a new surface directly on top of the existing one. We may also carry out localised surface reconstruction before overlaying the road.

Reconstruction

As the most expensive and disruptive form of resurfacing, we only recommend reconstruction as a last resort. While overlaying and inlaying help to prolong the lifespan of a road, there will eventually come a point where a full reconstruction makes a more cost-effective solution than ongoing maintenance and repairs.

When the surface and underlying layers have deteriorated to an advanced stage, we begin the reconstruction process. This typically involves deep excavations and stripping away of existing materials.

Our resurfacing specialists then replace the sub-base as well as the upper bituminous layers. After completing the final tarmacing, you essentially have a brand-new road built to last.
